Limited Stock of ModRetro Chromatics Goes On Sale In May 2025
So a little while ago keen observers would have spotted a comment on the news post about a pre-order run of ModRetro Chromatics 1st Editions’ being available from Dragonbox.de online webstore. As I had suspected not only was it a pre-order but a stock order too. There were a total of 66 pre-order’s taken and as of posting this there is still a fair bit of stock left (just shy of 50 units) across 4 different color schemes of the 1st Editions, none of them being the GameStop exclusive. The most popular seems to be the inferno with only 7 units available. Dragonbox.de do ship internationally so if you live outside of the USA this is a rare opportunity to get the sold out ModRetro Chromatic 1st Edition. The price is €200.84 ($225 USD) for a brand new boxed Chromatic with pack-in Tetris cartridge in your choice of 4 different color schemes: Inferno, Volt, Wave and Midnight. Noticeably Leaf and Bubblegum, green and pink respetively, are missing from the range. I’d personally be going for Wave but really any of them apart from Midnight look really good and at the end of the day Midnight Chromatics are still Chromatics. So you can’t lose, if you don’t have one of these here’s another chance to get a brand new one. I don’t like to spread FOMO but seriously this one will only get more expensive as time goes on, even though it’s called 1st Edition there won’t be another one coming out. It’s likely the 2nd Edition, if it comes out, would be a Gameboy Advance not a Gameboy Color.

As you can see the date on the screenshot is the 13th of May and the current Dragonbox.de website is showing the ModRetro Chromatic 1st Edition in stock in 4 different color schemes from 0.5 to just over 1 dozen units in stock in each variant. This is big news as the [we thought] only run of units had been completely sold out straight away. Some time has passed since then and 66 pre-orders then a run of possibly another 60-70 units have come up for sale at the same place. This is highly likely to mean that either the supplier paid ModRetro to print another [small] run for their own customers for pre-orders and shop stock. Or it means that they found a supplier with a large amount of unsold Chromatic’s stashed away waiting for a bulk buyer. The second option seems highly unlikely but the the first one is a real contender (Pikachu Detective reference joke). Anyway the tough part if you are Australian is to be able to get this deal on Afterpay since they don’t accept it maybe one of the other ones will work. If you have that much money to spare then consider yourself to be blessed, it would be a wise investment as long as you haven’t recently bought an Analogue or other aftermarket Gameboy Color. One thing is for sure is that these definitely aren’t going to last for much longer as they were only made available less then 24 hours before the time of writing of this article.
If you happen to have a ModRetro Chromatic 1st Edition, GameStop Exclusive or a color-scheme edition let us know in the comments. What country do you live in and how did you get it there? Was it expensive to purchase or difficult to find. How do you like gaming on this system, does it live up to your expectations? I’ve been hearing a lot of good things but I would like to confirm myself 1st hand with Chromatic owners myself. If you have one of these excellent machines we would love to hear your opinion of it here. Below I’ll include some relevant links as it’s been talked about on this website a fair bit now and also the relevant important external websites.
