The very popular Farming Simulator series of simulation video games is getting an official de-make for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. It’s a limited edition release by Strictly Limited Games and only 1000 copies are being sold in total on their website, a deluxe edition and a limited edition (500 copies available for each version). The difference between the deluxe and limited editions is the addition of a deluxe edition box and official CD soundtrack. Otherwise they are the same. The game release contains a professionally printed Sega Mega Drive case in Mega Drive styling, a green Mega Drive cartridge with label and game manual (black and white printing). The artwork on the case and cartridge looks very good, just like an original Mega Drive game so it wouldn’t look out of place on the shelf of Sega Mega Drive collection.

The game is not a simple port either as it features new handmade pixel-art graphics and the music soundtrack has been composed by Turrican music artist Christopher Hülsbeck. So people who buy this game are really getting something very special. I find the newer versions of the game to be quite dry and boring, I have Farming Simulator 17 on the Playstation 3 and found it to be only semi-realistic which makes it not very good to play considering it’s supposed to real simulator. It kills the atmosphere of realism, for example crops get harvested in only a few days so it’s a realistic simulator that’s not realistic which just makes weird and not fun at all. It should either be a fully realistic simulator or completely in a fictional video game world (like Harvest Moon SNES for example) not in between. The 16-bit version is the perfect solution to make the game fun and makes up for it being a semi-realistic real simulator. Fans of the series aren’t happy about the new 16-bit release as they would rather the company improve the issues of Farming Simulator 25, and I don’t blame them.

Graphically it’s very similar to Jungle Strike on the Mega Drive, it’s easy to imagine an Apache flying through and launching missiles at the barn.

At the moment about forty percent of the available pre-orders for the limited edition are still available for sale and about twenty percent of the deluxe edition left on the Strictly Limited Games website. So if you want a copy make sure you visit the link at the bottom of this page to secure your copy before they are all sold out. The game is also going to be sold in a few select retailers after the pre-orders have shipped including Amazon and Video Game Plus. The catch is that they will only sell a plain blank cartridge version of the game with no case, manual or anything else which isn’t very exciting. I’m not sure whether the blank cartridge will be green or just plain black but at least there will be another way to obtain a physical copy of the game. You could also print your own label and same with the case insert and game manual and it would probably be a bit cheaper, but it would be a reproduction and not an official copy. The deluxe edition costs €69.99 to pre-order while the limited edition is €49.99. Thankfully they ship internationally including to Australia, so if you are interested then take advantage of this rare opportunity to add a rare and unique game to your Sega Mega Drive collection.
