Vixen 357 - A Classic Japanese Strategy RPG for the Sega Mega Drive
Vixen 357 is a strategy RPG that is a mostly unknown game in the west which was released on the Sega Mega Drive in 1992. Since in only came out in Japanese without any translation it’s mostly unknown amongst English-speaking gamers. The game was extremely popular in Japan for it’s heavy narrative focus and strategic depth. The game takes place in the futuristic year 2394 where the human race, still heavily embroiled in constant war but against an aliens, though surprisingly it’s a different threat that is facing humanity.
As a member of an elite Slash Unit you are in control of advanced VECTOR military mech that you will need to use in tactical combat to uncover a conspiracy that could doom the planet. The game focuses on elements including resource management, positioning and careful decisions in combat as every pilot’s life is in your hands. Gameplay features includes strategic freedom – the ability to assign any VECTOR mech to any character, permadeath – whenever a pilot dies they are not able to used in any future battles and narrative decisions – the decisions you make affect how the story plays out.
Pre-Order and Distribution Details
The game has been translated into English by Shinyuden, a video game publisher based in Tokyo that specializes in classic re-releases and localizations of Japanese indie titles. One notable game they co-published in 2025 was an English release of Cyber Citizen Shockman Zero, a Super Famicom game that was only available as a Satellaview digital download in 1997. The difference between this game and other after-market published games (games published well after the Super NES’s commercial life cycle had ended) is that it’s professionally published. Not only is the quality a cut above most other newly published games but it’s also considered official by Nintendo’s standards. Shockman was the first offical newly published Super Nintendo games since the last wave of games were released in 2000 such as Metal Slader Glor: Director’s Cut and Fire Emblem: Thracia 766.
You can expect the quality of the release of Vixen 357 to be very high, it will be treated as an officially released game as it’s a recognized publisher that is legitimately released an English localization of a licensed game. It’s being released as an “Exclusive International Edition” which I am assuming means that it should work on Sega Mega Drive and Sega Genesis consoles from all regions. The game is going to be distributed via pre-orders which are available from December 12th 2025 to March 27 2026 directly from the Shinyuden website (see bottom of the page for the link). After the pre-order period ends the game will start shipping almost immediately in April 2026 so buyers will not have to endure a lengthy wait before they receive the game.
1990's Style Physical Release
The publisher is going all out on this “Exclusive International Edition” by including a whole lot of extras with the game replicating items that often came with titles that were published in the 1990’s. However rarely did games released in the 1990’s include so many extras for one game but they pulled out all the stops here for maximum nostalgia value. The following is a list of included items that you get if you pre-order a copy of Vixen 357:
- Registration Card (very common 90’s game inclusion)
- Collector’s Card (certifies authenticity)
- Instruction Manual (necessary addition to every game published from the 1980’s to 2010’s)
- Set of 3 Postcards (some nice pixel art that’s relevant to Vixen 357)
- Double-sided Poster (many 1990’s published games included a large game poster or map)
- Reversible Cover (two types of game covers to choose from, possibly one for Genesis and one for Mega Drive)
- Coupon (get some bucks off your next Shinyuden game purchase)
That is quite a lot of extra’s that you get with the game. It’s great they managed to include so many extras that are genuine to the era and not just random junk like magnets and keychains.
If you want to get your hands on the latest officially Sega Mega Drive game it will cost you $69.95 USD excluding shipping.
