Luft Gears for the Game Boy DMG
Retro Game News is pleased to announce that our online web shop will be receiving stock of a very unique Game Boy DMG homebrew game called “Luft Gears”. The game was funded on Kickstarter earlier this year and as such the pledges have ended and the game is no longer available for sale to the public. The good news is that your’s truly has managed to secure limited stock exclusively for Retro Game News and will available to purchase. It will be sold for the same price the game was available on Kickstarter for €59 which is the equivalent of $105 AUD. This is for the “Basic box version” which includes a game cartridge with a professionally printed game label, a game box that has the same dimensions as an officially released DMG game which also has also been professionally published with lovely artwork with what you would expect on a Game Boy game box and of course the flight manual (instruction manual).
About the Game
The game has been described by the creator and indie game developor Cestmir Kocian from Kocian Tech as a Roguelike (sub-genre of the RPG genre) spaceship simulation. So it has blended gameplay from different game styles which makes for some very unique gameplay and an gaming experience that is difficult to find anywhere else. It is most definitely a unique game with it’s own unique features and a breath of fresh air into a game market that is saturated with many clones, copies and genre’s that have been done to death. For those who enjoy games that require thinking and strategy and have a unique atmosphere of discovery and exploration then this game will be right up your alley. This is not a game that is just mindless blasting of shooting anything that moves, though there is nothing wrong with such games, but this is for those who wish for a more strategic challenge.
Key elements of the game include:
- Space exploration and planet discovery
- Real-time space craft combat
- Space ship systems maintenance, repairs and upgrades
- Resource collection and management to avoid becoming stranded in space
- Exploring randomly generated caves on planets to mine materials to craft gears, fix machinery and upgrade your sip
- Maintain your ship in top functional order by keeping an eye on critical systems like engine, radar, canons and armory
- Enhance ship capability by boosting the engines and equipping improved weaponry to survive exploring deep space
- Defend against space pirates by upgrading your weaponry, reinforcing the hull and mastering battle tactics
- The overall mission of exploring deep space is to track down the source of a lost signal
The Story Line
The war is over, and the Republic stands victorious. The world is at our feet, rebuilt in our image, and the skies that once rumbled with battle now feel empty. My time with the Luft Gears, flying those mighty airships into combat, seems like a lifetime ago. I never imagined I’d be called to the skies again—let alone beyond them.
They came to me a few weeks ago, officials from the Republic, men I’ve never met, but the kind that speak with quiet authority. They told me about a signal—a faint transmission from a spacecraft sent out before the war, long thought lost. During the war, the Republic stopped its space missions, focused all resources on winning the conflict. But now, with victory secured, they want to resume the old programs.
The signal was picked up far beyond anything we’ve reached before, and they need a captain to lead the first ship back out there. They said they wanted someone experienced, someone who had seen war and had the discipline to handle the unknown. That’s why they came to me.
The Game Play
As a Luft Gears pilot, you will step into the cockpit once again, not to fly the war-torn skies, but to venture into the uncharted depths of space, responding to a mysterious signal from a lost pre-war spacecraft. Your journey will take you into unknown star systems, where the remnants of humanity’s early space exploration lie scattered, and where dangers await at every turn.
Your ship, once a symbol of diesel-fueled might, now becomes your lifeline in the vast emptiness of space.
As you navigate through generated planet systems,
each discovery offers both opportunity and peril. Derelict stations, satelites, other pilots lost is vastenes of space,…
But they may also hide deadly threats. Each jump into the unknown will test your wits, your crew’s skills, and your ship’s resilience.
Survival is never guaranteed. Resources are scarce, and you must manage every aspect of your mission—from Black diesel fuel, gears to fix broken ship machinery to craftin materials found on planet surface. Every decision matters: Do you risk precious fuel to explore lone planet? Or conserve your resources and push forward, hoping for a safer find further down the line? The further you travel, the more dangerous space becomes, and the greater the rewards.
As captain, you’re completely alone on the ship. There’s no crew to rely on—just you, the cold machinery, and the infinite expanse of space. Every system on the ship is in your hands, and survival depends on your ability to keep it all running. You’ll need to maintain the functionality of the engine, radar, armory, and ship cannon, constantly juggling repairs and resource management to ensure you can keep pushing deeper into uncharted territory.
The engine needs to be in perfect shape to keep you moving between planet systems, while the radar is essential for scanning planets, stations, and detecting potential threats. Your armory and cannon are your only defense against hostiles you may encounter, but firing them could drain ship power or even cause damage on your ship. Balancing offensive capabilities with keeping your ship functional is key.
Over time, you’ll be able to upgrade your ship. Whether through salvaging parts from derelict ships or finding hidden technology on distant planets, improvements can be made to make your journey easier. The right upgrades can even give you the edge in space battles—turning the tide in otherwise hopeless situations.
Securing Your Copy of Luft Gears
Now that you appetite for this awesome gem of a homebrew game has been sufficiently whetted you will be wanting to know how you can secure yourself a copy. As mentioned stocks are very limited and once they are gone there will be no other way to acquire to game. Very few people in the world currently have their hands on this game. Even half the backer’s of the kickstarter campaign, the ones that live in the USA have not yet received their copies due to issues with tariff’s enforced by the Trump administration. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to add this very unique Spanish-made gem to your Game Boy collection. You definitely won’t regret it.
While I can ship overseas I am giving first preference to my fellow Australian retro game collectors and also shipping will be cheapest locally. However if after a period of there not being enough demand locally I will take orders internationally. So if you are Australian and would like to get secure a copy I strongly suggest letting us know through the “contact us” link found just below the banner between “checkout” and “guestbook”. Simply type a message that describes your intentions in wanting to order a copy of Luft Gears and we will get back to you shortly with all the required information.
