Have you ever wondered what console other retro gamers are actually spending their time on? We live in a time where retro gaming has become incredibly popular, even mainstream. What was once obscure, rare, or prohibitively expensive is now more accessible than ever before. With FPGA systems replacing aging hardware and sophisticated flash cartridges opening up entire libraries, nearly every console can now be explored without the barriers that once existed. For the first time in history, retro gamers truly have the ability to experience almost any console they’re curious about.

Everyone has a favorite console, and usually it’s the one we spent the most time with during childhood. For me, that was the Super Nintendo. I spent countless hours playing the SNES alone, with family, and with friends who came over for the weekend. It was a huge part of my early gaming life and it shaped the way I look at games even today. Like most retro gamers, nostalgia played a big role in where I started. However, this discussion is not about which console is “better.” That argument has been done to death, from the original console wars right through to modern social media debates. Instead, what I find far more interesting is this: what are modern retro gamers actually playing right now in 2026? Not what they grew up with, not what they argue about online, but what console they are genuinely spending the most time on today.

What retro game console are you playing? These 3 brands represent all the consoles in the poll, the others aren't very popular.

To be clear, I am not referring to people playing remastered collections downloaded onto a modern system. I am talking about retro gamers who own and use real hardware. These are gamers who maintain collections, plug in original controllers, and still dedicate part of their gaming time to classic systems even while owning modern consoles. In a time when access to retro gaming has never been easier, it becomes fascinating to see which consoles are truly getting the most attention. As for me, I have recently found myself spending a surprising amount of time — and disposable income — on the PlayStation 3. The PS3 launched in 2006, which means it is now twenty years old, and it had an unusually long lifecycle before being discontinued in 2017. Over that decade it built a massive and diverse library of games. Early in its life it struggled, but once developers became comfortable with the hardware and prices dropped, the system saw wave after wave of releases.

Today the PS3 sits in a very interesting position in the market. Games are plentiful, many are still affordable, and there are countless hidden gems waiting to be discovered. It occupies a space that is not quite modern anymore, yet not fully absorbed into the expensive retro collector bubble either. That balance makes it an incredibly compelling system to explore in 2026. While I still play other systems, the PS3 is currently getting the majority of my attention. That is my story, but I am far more interested in yours. In a time when modern retro gamers have access to more consoles and more games than at any other point in history, discovering which system is truly getting the most playtime is genuinely fascinating. So now I want to know: what console are you actually playing the most right now?
