An extremely successful kickstarter campaign has raised over $3.5 million for a third issue release of the ZX Spectrum Next. It’s an FPGA ZX Spectrum computer with the addition of support for extra platforms such as Commdore 64 and Sinclair QL. It’s previous two issue have been so successful that they have sold more then 10,000 units worldwide. The latest version utilizes a larger and more powerful FPGA then previous iterations, the Artix A7 XC7A35T-2CSG324C featuring “a ton more enhancements under the hood.”. The new 8 bit computer has some great modern features such as built-in networking and HDMI output. The machine is also not just built for playing but also built for creating as it features the powerful new NextBASIC (“never underestimate the power of BASIC”) and full C support, Assembly and complete IDE and toolchains. All the tools and and community support are there for budding creatives who want to develop or create for the platform. The cost of the machine is £300 which is equivalent to about $617 AUD, so it’s far from cheap but if you are a developer for one of the platforms supported I’m sure it would be an indispensable and necessary tool. It would be a great replacement to the incredibly aged Commodore 64 which requires having a 40 year old computer with a giant massive power brick with RF output. There is a cheaper option if you are willing to go the DIY route and forego the case and and all the accessories. It’s actually cheap enough to make it worth going through the effort. The ZX Spectrum Next Issue 3 is due to ship by the end of this year with the order window currently still being open for late pledges/orders.
