Good News Everyone - Secret of Monkey Island Being Ported to C64

The Commodore 64 is an old 8-bit computer with many simple games on it due to it’s inherent limitations. Despite this it does have few more complex games, my favorite is Street Rod which was made by a crew of Polish programmers. It also has Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, both are LucasArts point and click adventure games that are driven by the SCUMM engine. For those who don’t know it stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion and it was first introduced in the game Maniac Mansion however it was used in many later games, all of which became legendary and are considered created during the golden age of point and click adventure games. Going by release order, indie devs Joachim Ljunggren and Andreas Larrson decided to skip a few titles and port over The Secret of Monkey Island a classic title that introduced many gamers to the joys of LucasArts (LucasFilm) point and click adventure games.

The game is being re-made from scratch! Meaning all of the sprites, backgrounds and animations all need to be hand drawn before they can be incorporated into the new Commodore 64 port. This is a monumental undertaking for one person as you can imagine, as the original game initially had an entire team working on it. Despite this the graphics that are currently available look very good and it looks like a lot has been done already. So this is a treat that SCUMM fans look forward to in 2026. Additionally the Commodore 64 is famous for it’s iconic sounding SID chip which makes for some funky sounding chip tunes promises to impress with the classic Monkey Island tunes converted into SID chip style! The exact release date in unknown but stay tuned to RetroGame.News and you will definitely be informed when that day arrives.
