One very intelligent NES fan and musician has created a MIDI synthesizer using NES hardware. It’s a very impressive piece of kit but not only does it look the part it’s able to create some amazing chip tunes based on the game cartridge that is inserted. For some reason MIDI sound is an incredibly under-utilized sound platform in game consoles. However it’s able to create amazing amazing music effects using extra hardware. I recently purchased a Roland SC-55 which I use to play 1990’s PC games like The Secret of Monkey Island, Space Quest V, Doom/Doom II, Star Trek 25th Anniversary and many other games have better music using MIDI. Additionally I’ve even found some games on retro gaming systems that utilize MIDI sound which can be enjoyed by playing them on an emulator like Illusion City and SD Snatcher on MSX. I believe a lot of Sharp X68000 games are compatible with MIDI devices as well. To hear what the NES sounds like with MIDI capabilities watch the video of the custom built NES-SY2.0 synthesizer.
