The World's First Super Game Boy Exclusive Game
Here’s a very interesting development to start off RGN’s September’s news. The world’s first Super Game Boy exclusive game has been reported to have been created. A number of Game Boy games, when the Super Game Boy first came out, have taken advantage of the Super Nintendo hardware to enhance Game Boy DMG games by giving them color enhancements when the cartridge is played via the Super Game Boy. In case you don’t know what the Super Game Boy is, it’s a converter cartridge that takes Game Boy cartridges and is inserted into the Super Nintendo cartridge slot allowing users to play Game Boy games on the Super Nintendo. This enabled Game Boy DMG games to be played with color enhancements on the Super Nintendo. Some games that took advantage of this are Legend of the River King, Balloon Fight GB, Conker’s Pocket Tales, Pokémon Gold and Silver and Shadowgate Classic.
However none of the games which took advantage of the extra features of the Super Game Boy are titles which are exclusive to the hybrid platform. All the games that can be played on the Super Game Boy can also be played on the Game Boy DMG and/or the Game Boy Color therefore none could be classified as Super Game Boy exclusives. Now that has apparently changed as an amateur game developer known as Dr. Ludos has claimed to have created the first Super Game Boy exclusive game. Now you may be thinking how is this possibly possible? As any game that works on the Super Game Boy would also work on the Game Boy DMG or Color. Well permit me to explain the situation.
A Hidden Super Game Boy Feature, Disabled by Nintendo
There exists a ‘hidden’ Super Game Boy feature, invented by Nintendo, that has never been used by any SGB compatible game. The reason for this is that the feature had some issues with it and Nintendo, for whatever reason, never invested in attempting to fix the issues or were unable to fix them. The feature is the ability for DMG games played on the Super Game Boy to have 16-bit Super Nintendo sprites to be overlaid on the Game Boy 8-bit graphics. As you can imagine this would lead to some striking graphics and the creation of some very unique games. Unfortunately it was never used because the aforementioned Super Nintendo sprites could only, at best, be displayed once every two frames. This resulted in the sprites appearing on the screen in a state of constant flickering, which doesn’t look very good at all. Because of this the feature, though present, was disabled in the Super Game Boy BIOS ROM. So that explains that unfortunate situation resulting in a really cool feature ultimately being unused by any commercially released games.
DMG vs Super Game Boy
The feature has since been unlocked by a clever person from the ROM hacking community. Nenson Dubois had figured out how to unlock the feature by finding a way around the lockout protection that Nintendo used to disable the feature. Now I’m not exactly sure on the details but I believe the flickering issue had been overcome by Dr. Ludos who then took advantage of this by creating the first ever Super Game Boy exclusive game called “DMG vs Super Game Boy”. The game itself uses icons and graphics from the Super Game Boy menu (activated by pressing L+R). Using these SNES sprites he made a simple game in which they fly around the screen and you have to catch them with an anthropomorphized Game Boy DMG and throw them at the sides of the screen. That’s my understanding of it anyway, I haven’t played the game for very long as I just wanted to test it for research in writing this article. The game ROM can be downloaded from Dr. Ludos’ itch.io page and played either on real hardware by using a physical Super Game Boy and Game Boy flash cartridge or via an FXPAKPro which can emulate the Super Game Boy. I have tried the latter but unfortunately the sprites flicker as described when I play it. If you know what I need to do to get it to play properly please let me know by contacting or through the comments.
